All the Buddhas throughout the universe and all sentient beings in their entirety are nothing whatsoever apart from the One Mind alone. Beyond the One Mind, nothing whatsoever exists. This One Mind, which is free from any basis or origin, is that which was never born and cannot be destroyed.

It is not green or yellow, nor does it have form or appearance. It is not counted among things that have an established nature, nor does it have any establishment. One cannot conclude that it is new or old, long or short, great or small. This is because it exists beyond all boundaries, beyond measurement, beyond naming, beyond leaving traces, and beyond all comparison whatsoever.

This One Mind is the thing we see directly before our eyes, and yet if you were to apply logic to it—attempting to determine what it is—you would fall into error immediately. It is like the Void (emptiness), which has no boundaries on any side, which cannot be sounded or measured.

This One Mind alone is the Buddha. There is no difference between the Buddha and sentient beings whatsoever. The only difference is that sentient beings cling to various material forms (rūpdhamma), and because of this, they seek Buddha-nature from outside themselves. Their seeking causes them to miss Buddha-nature. Doing so is equivalent to using the Buddha to seek for the Buddha, and using the mind to grasp the mind. Though they exert themselves to the fullest for an entire kalpa, they will not be able to reach Buddha-nature.

They do not know that if they simply ceased all fabricated thinking and gave up the restless grasping for attainment, the Buddha would appear before them. This is because the mind itself is the Buddha, and the Buddha is all living beings whatsoever. When this very thing appears in an ordinary person, it is no small matter; and when it appears in the Buddhas, it is no great matter.

With regard to the practice of the six perfections (pāramī) and the performance of countless other practices similar to them, or the accumulation of immeasurable merit like the grains of sand in the Ganges River—reflect on this: since we are already complete in the ultimate truth and are the One Mind, or are already at one with all the Buddhas, we should not attempt to add anything to that which is already complete through such meaningless practices. When occasion permits, perform them; when occasion passes, simply rest.

If we have not decisively seen that the mind is the Buddha, whether we still cling to various material forms or still cling to various practices or still cling to various wholesome deeds—our understanding will remain mistaken and will not accord with the Way at all.

The One Mind alone is the Buddha. There is no other Buddha anywhere, nor any other mind anywhere. It is brilliant and flawless just like the Void—it has no form or phenomenon whatsoever. If we use our mind to fabricate various dreams and fantasies, this is equivalent to discarding the essential content and binding ourselves to material forms which are merely like husks. The Buddha which has existed eternally is not the Buddha of clinging and grasping.

The practice of the six perfections and the performance of countless other practices similar to them with the intention of becoming a Buddha are practices that progress gradually, step by step. But the Buddha which has existed eternally, as stated earlier, is not one that is reached through such gradual step-by-step practice. It is simply a matter of awakening to and forgetting oneself in this One Mind. And there is nothing whatsoever to attain. This is the true Buddha. The Buddha and all sentient beings are this One Mind alone. Nothing exists apart from this.

Mind is like the Void, and within that void there is neither confusion nor any impurity. Just as when the sun passes through the void it illuminates all four directions, so when the sun rises it bathes the whole earth in light. Yet the true Void does not become bright when the sun rises, nor does it become dark when the sun sets. The phenomena of brightness and darkness alternate with one another, but the nature of the Void remains unchanging. The mind of the Buddha and that of all sentient beings is just so.

Whether we view the Buddha as the one who manifests the appearance of clarity and awakeness, or whether we view sentient beings as the ones who manifest the appearance of delusion, darkness, and confusion—these very feelings and thoughts, arising from clinging to material forms, keep us from the highest knowledge. Though we were to practice for countless kalpas equal to the grains of sand in the Ganges River, there is only the One Mind alone, and not a single atom of anything else to rely upon. This is because the mind itself is the Buddha.

When we students of the Way do not forget ourselves in that which is essential—namely, this mind—we obscure the Mind with our own fabricated thoughts. We seek the Buddha outside ourselves. We still cling to material forms and various meritorious practices. All of this is dangerous and is in no way the path leading to the highest knowledge spoken of here.

The essence of the highest, inwardly, is like wood or stone—that is, it is free from movement—and outwardly it is like the Void—that is, free from boundaries or obstacles. This is neither abstract nor concrete. It has no specific location, no form or shape, and cannot be destroyed.

This mind is not the mind that is fabricated thought. It is something which exists otherwise, completely free from involvement with material forms. Therefore, all the Buddhas and all sentient beings are likewise. We need only strip ourselves of fabricated thinking, and we will accomplish everything.

The true Dharma is the mind itself. Apart from that, there is no Dharma whatsoever. The mind is the Dharma. Apart from that, it is not the mind. The mind by itself is not the mind, and yet it is not non-mind. That the mind is not the mind means this: there is something which truly exists. This lies beyond words. Let all thinking and explanation cease. When this occurs, the stream of words is cut off and the mental activity (pṛtti) of mind is abandoned completely.

This mind is the pure Buddha-ground (buddhayoni) which is present in all people. All sentient beings capable of feeling and consciousness, whether all of them, the Buddhas together with all Bodhisattvas, or any sentient being whatsoever—all are of this one natural reality alone and do not differ. All differences arise solely from our mistaken thinking, and this drives us toward creating every kind of karma without ceasing.

The nature of our original Buddha-nature is, in the highest truth, something which has not the slightest trace of self-identity even as a single atom (paramāṇu). This is the Void—it is present everywhere, peaceful and quiet, and without any admixture. It is a happiness that is both radiant and occluded, and it is simply that alone.

Enter deeply into this by forgetting it with your own eyes. This very thing which is before you is complete in its entirety and is perfect in every way. Nothing exists apart from this.

Mind is the Buddha (the Supreme), and it embraces all things within itself completely. From the Buddhas who have awakened at the highest level all the way down to the lowest category of sentient being—the creatures that crawl and insects at the lowest level—all things have an equal share in Buddha-nature, and every single thing is one and the same in content with the Buddha at all times.

If we were merely to achieve understanding of our own mind and discover its true nature through that very understanding alone, it would be certain that there is nothing whatsoever that we need to seek.

Our mind, if we make it genuinely still—free from thought, which is the very slightest movement of mind—its true nature will reveal itself as the Void. Then we shall discover that it has no form, that it does not occupy any space whatsoever, that it does not fall under the classification of things that have existence or non-existence. The reason for this is that these very things cannot be felt through the sense faculties, for this mind, which is the true nature of our humanity, is the womb or source—it is not made by anyone and cannot be destroyed.

In responding to various surroundings, it transforms itself into various phenomena for the sake of convenience in speech. We speak of the mind as an intelligent being that thinks or creates things. It is something that cannot be said to classify as having existence or not having existence.

Moreover, even while it performs the function of creating things in accord with the law of cause and effect, it remains something that cannot be felt through the sense faculties—the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mental faculty. If we know this truth and remain quiet in the state of nothingness, at that moment we are already walking the path of all the Buddhas in truth. Therefore, we should develop the mind to rest on complete nothingness.

The five roots of the viññāṇa (spirit-vehicle) are empty of self, and the five elements of material form are not what compose our true self. The true mind has no form and has no coming or going. The original nature of us is one thing which has no beginning through birth and no end through death, but is one continuous reality, completely free from movement in its deepest nature.

Our mind and the things which surround us are one and the same thing. If we truly come to this understanding, we will attain illumination and awakeness in a single instant. We will be people no longer involved in the three realms of existence. We will be beyond the world. We will have no inclination toward rebirth. We will be ourselves alone, free from all fabricated thinking, and identical with that Supreme Thing. We will attain the state where nothing is fabricated any longer. Therefore, this is the fundamental Dharma principle here.

Sammāsambbodhi (Perfect Enlightenment) is the name for the vision that there is no Dharma whatsoever which is not void (suñña). If we understand this truth, what benefit would any deception bring us?

Paññā (wisdom/insight) is knowing. Knowing is the original primordial mind free from form. If we can understand that the doer and the thing done are mind and matter—one and the same thing—this very understanding leads us to this knowing. We will awaken to the highest truth by ourselves.

The highest truth of us does not disappear from us even while we are lost in avidyā (spiritual ignorance), nor does it return to us when we have right understanding. It is the nature of ultimate reality (bhūtathatā). In this nature, there is neither ignorance nor right understanding. It is filled with the Void and is the true content of the One Mind. Since this is so, how can all the emotions and conditions which our mind has created—both abstract and concrete—possibly exist outside this Void?

Fundamentally, the Void is something free from all dimensions of space—free from defilements, free from karma, free from ignorance, and free from right understanding. We must come to clear understanding that in truth there is nothing—no ordinary human being, no Buddha—for within the Void there is not even a hair's breadth of space that can be perceived through the dimension or law of space. It does not depend on anything and is not connected to anything. It is immaculate beauty, something which exists by itself alone, and is the ultimate thing that was not created. It is a jewel beyond all valuation. We must separate ourselves from the 'extracted form' (rūpathoda) through wisdom, and the path must be abandoned, the fruit must be abandoned—the debt is repaid and the cause of becoming is exhausted.

Sentient and non-sentient beings in the universe are numberless. When combined, there are only form and name (rūpa-nāma) in total. Original name is the void of the universe paired with form-and-name as cause of becoming. Where there is form, there must be name; where there is name, there must be form. Form and name together create causation and reaction, changing continuously and giving rise to time. Form has attraction for itself, which is the cause for form to move and rotate around itself according to conditions. For form to move, there must be name. The void interspaces between form, which is why form can move.

When the nature of phenomena is thus, all things—matter both living and non-living—must change as the three characteristics (anicca): arising, passing away, and continuity. Every instant the mind never stops shifting.

Mind-and-spirit (viññāṇa) arises from the form-and-name of the universe. It is a magical illusion that transforms and causes people to become deluded. From form-and-name without life, it transforms to form-and-name with life; from form-and-name with life, it becomes form-and-name with both life and spirit. Then spirit itself transforms and separates from itself, leaving only 'name without form'—this is the pinnacle of form-and-name's deception.

The cause giving rise to form-and-name of the universe generates various 'form-name worlds' and countless stars without end. These form-name worlds are the cause that gives rise to 'form-name plants.' Form-name plants are the cause that gives rise to 'form-name animals' that move, which is why we call them living beings.

In truth, whether form-name has life or does not have life, it moves because it has form and name as cause and effect, creating reactions within itself, causing continuous movement and change. We cannot see it with the eye, so we call it non-living.

When the form-name of plants transforms into the form-name of animals, this becomes the starting point of an animal's life and gives rise to the spirit-vehicle (viññāṇa), its manifestation and movement—this becomes the cause for karma to arise.

The first generation of animals creates only unwholesome karma, eats other animals, and possesses anger, greed, and delusion according to external and internal circumstances that strike them. The karma which animals display has five senses—eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body—that strike against five objects—form, sound, smell, taste, and touch—then imprint, lodge, record, and photograph themselves onto the subtle atom (paramāṇu), which is the 'subtle form' hidden within the void. We cannot see it with the eyes, hidden as it is in the void that fills the interstices of the five senses.

When this first-generation animal dies, it has only unwholesome karma, which causes the animal to be reborn to pay off that unwholesome karma. But when the animal is reborn, it does not pay off the debt; instead, it increases the debt, causing it to multiply through male and female, becoming subtle form attached to these five aggregates, multiplying until the present lifetime.

Therefore, through the power of unwholesome karma in the five aggregates of subtle form, they rotate together into a 'smooth atom-form,' maintaining its form through continuous rotation around itself without stopping, providing a dwelling for the spirit to reside within, called the 'form-spirit' (rūpaviññāṇa) or the 'extracted form' (rūpathoda), because it is extracted from the name-void that interspaces the five senses. This subtle form hidden in the void gives life to the form-spirit, causing it to endure and last longer than gross form, sustained by unwholesome karma that keeps it rotating and maintaining its form. No god can kill it except for Nibbāna alone.

Regarding the display of karma of the animal residing in the subtle form, the five senses—eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body—combine together as what is called mind. Thus, there is a headquarters of mind attached to the five aggregates of the spirit-vehicle, combining together as the workplace of the central mind, then connecting with the five external senses—eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body—which are the mediums of the mind's contact. Therefore, mind and spirit-vehicle are not the same. Mind is the one who feels and thinks, while the spirit-vehicle is the dwelling-house for the mind to reside and the vehicle that carries the mind to rebirth or anywhere else, maintaining the 'subtle form'—the form extracted from gross form, with the appearance of male or female, with the five senses residing in the spirit-vehicle—becoming the cause for the continuation of rebirth and lifetimes.

When the animal dies, the life of the gross body of that particular realm ends according to the lifespan of the gross body of that realm. But the true life, the subtle atom, and the spirit-vehicle do not die with it; they must go on to be reborn according to various realms according to the circumstances of saṃsāra, rotating and transforming.

This true life, this subtle form or spirit-vehicle that rotates around itself, is what causes the mind to arise, cease, and continue, ever-receiving the external and internal events that strike it, accumulating whatever is good or bad as capital, as cause of arising, cause of ceasing, or further fabrication, until the unwholesome karma that causes arising is exhausted. Then this true life, this subtle form or spirit-vehicle, will cease its rotation; the subtle form 'form-spirit' which arose from unwholesome karma and has continued since the first lifetime will disintegrate and scatter. Good deeds and Dharma attached to the spirit-vehicle will scatter with the subtle atoms. What remains is the pure void filling every space between the atoms. Therefore, without the atoms, this void becomes pure and bright, merging into the pure and bright void of the universe itself, becoming one—this is called 'Nibbāna.'

When the Blessed Buddha established the spiritual life of Buddhism to become complete in every way as he intended, he ascended to the Anupadisesa-Nibbāna (Nibbāna without remainder). In the manner of entering the Anupadisesa-Nibbāna, first he developed jhāna, entering deeply until reaching the Saññāvedayitanirodha—cessation of perception and feeling—which means entering into the cessation above the 'formless jhāna.'

At that initial stage, he had not completely extinguished the aggregates in a definitive way. He was merely entering into the process of moving toward Nibbāna or cessation as the final act of his life. Put simply, he was returning to what he had created and cultivated as the way and example—one last time, which can be said to be that which arose from his willingness to dwell with suffering—suffering that is so subtle that ordinary people with their gross minds cannot perceive it as suffering.

This is the process through which he brought his mind to attain that Saññāvedayitanirodha—a process which only the Anuttara-Sammasambubdha, the Supreme Buddha of the world, discovered and revealed to the world for sentient beings to practice. When he had done this final thing, he withdrew back into the first jhāna, then with his final determination, he extinguished the aggregates one by one: the viññāṇa-khanda (the consciousness aggregate) of his life and body, because the saṅkhāra-khanda (the aggregate of mental formations) or the inner dharma must be extinguished first, so the consciousness aggregate was extinguished; therefore, no seed whatsoever of the gross consciousness aggregate remained.

He began to extinguish the saṅkhāra-khanda or inner dharma which at the deepest level would produce craving for becoming (vibbava-tanhā), entering into the second jhāna, then extinguished the saññā-khanda (the aggregate of perception), entering into the third jhāna. When he extinguished the saṅkhāra-khanda or inner dharma at the deepest level yet again, he entered into the fourth jhāna, with only the vedanā-khanda (the aggregate of feeling)—the ultimate feeling of life—remaining, which is the nature of the final stage of complete extinction.

When he had extinguished the grand final saṅkhāra-khanda or inner dharma, he then extinguished the vedanā-khanda—which is the citta-khanda or nāma-khanda (the aggregate of mind or name) at the inner level, that is, the bhavanga-citta (the life-continuum mind). Then he emerged from the fourth jhāna together with extinguishing the final true citta-khanda or nāma-khanda of his being.

This is where he truly entered into Nibbāna. Here he did not enter Nibbāna through any jhāna whatsoever. When he emerged from the fourth jhāna, the consciousness aggregate or name aggregate was extinguished together. Nothing remained. That is, he extinguished the feeling aggregate while the mind was awake—in the ordinary mental process of a human being—complete with full mindfulness and clear awareness, not dominated or obscured by any other condition, creating delusion of any kind whatsoever—a state of absolute completeness unto himself.

When the final true feeling aggregate was completely destroyed, he became utterly pure, free from all conditioning formations and devoid of every trace of consciousness aggregate or name aggregate within him. What remained was only the form aggregate, which cannot have life; for form is not life. When name is gone, it is merely a lump, merely an object of matter alone.

This is the sequence of jhānas which Ven. Anuruddha led his mind through to behold: it is the method of extinguishing in truth, of genuinely extinguishing, with the Buddha as the extinguisher himself.
